PREP VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: Dallas wins tourney title

Dragons go 5-0 in Portland to win championship

PORTLAND — Dallas opened its 2014 volleyball season by going undefeated en route to winning the Madison Tournament championship Saturday.

“I was really proud of the girls and how they came out ready to play,” Dragons coach Shana Lavier said. “They kept their enthusiasm and intensity up during the course of the long day.”

Dallas opened the tournament with pool play wins over Hood River Valley (25-18, 25-20), Jefferson (25-11, 25-5) and David Douglas (25-18, 25-22).

The Dragons defeated Hood River Valley again in the semifinals, winning 20-25, 25-13, 15-10 before defeating Forest Grove 25-21, 25-20 in the title game.

Dallas saw several players step up, including setter Amanda Dankenbring, who served 13 points against Jefferson, and libero Danielle Remington, who had eight kills against David Douglas.

The Dragons hosted Woodburn on Tuesday after press time to open Mid-Willamette Conference play. Dallas faces Central Thursday at 6 p.m. before playing at South Albany Tuesday at 6 p.m. where Lavier will be looking to see her team continue to thrive.

“I need the girls to continue to stay aggressive,” Lavier said. “…We have a very scrappy team that keeps the ball alive. It is fun to watch. We play in a very tough league, but these girls are ready to start.”

FALLS CITY SWEPT BY COUNTRY CHRISTIAN: Falls City lost its season-opening and Casco League-opening match to Country Christian Thursday, falling 25-10, 25-15, 25-9. Despite the setback, Mountaineers coach Roxi Barnhart said she was pleased with the team’s effort, especially from setter/defensive specialist Allison Kidd and middle blocker/outside hitter Tiauannah Davis. “I am so proud of these girls for their ambition and drive,” Barnhart said. The Mountaineers faced C.S. Lewis Academy Tuesday after press time. Falls City plays at Jewell Wednesday (today) at 5:30 p.m. before hosting Mohawk Friday at 5 p.m. for the squad’s first home match of the season.
